The Robins' Box

Built on the back (west side) of the bird box tower, it is under the cover of the Leylandii trees and receives only a small amount of direct sunshine in the late afternoon.

Since the year 2000 nesting season I have made some modifications to improve the picture taking arrangements.

The box measures about 8in(20cm) wide and 3in(8cm) deep internally. The front opening is about 2in(5cm) high.
The wire seen at the right of the box is for a microphone. A wire on the left side is for IR LED's.

This shows the arrangement behind the box, inside the birdbox tower.

The camera is mounted upside-down and is pointing through glass towards a front silvered mirror on the underside of the sloping roof.

The arrangement is normally covered by black fabric

A front silvered mirror is essential in this set-up to avoid the photographic disaster illustrated here.

My use of an ordinary mirror in the early stages of nesting in year 2000 left me with images that suffered from internal reflections, giving multiple images.

The front silvered mirror came from a scrapped microfiche reader.
